This site was inspired by Quiet Hacker News and all the motivations behind it.
I do actually actively use an RSS reader, Feedly and it is excellent. What I really wanted was a combination of the "slow news" approach of Quite Hacker News, with some additional sources for other topics.
The links all take you directly to the story on the actual site. While you could check each one individually, all too often the homepages are 10Mb+ with auto playing videos. That may be fine if you're checking them on a newer MacBook Pro, but if you're like most people, using a 5 year old machine with 10 other programs running, they can become almost unusable. And it's only worse if you're on a phone!
The goal is to keep any page/view to under 100kb of HTML and CSS, total, with a minimum of DOM depth, to keep it as fast as possible.
